In a continued and concerted effort to combat drug smuggling, Sonitpur Police have recently made significant strides with two major operations resulting in the seizure of large quantities of ganja and the apprehension of a suspect. On May 24th, police received credible information about a Bolero vehicle, bearing the registration number AS-07-Q5288, suspected of transporting ganja from Rowta, Udalguri to Nagaon. Acting swiftly, a naka checkpoint was established. The driver of the Bolero, upon noticing the checkpoint, attempted to evade arrest by accelerating through it. A high-speed pursuit ensued, culminating in the vehicle crashing into a tree near the Headquarters of the 4 Corps. The suspects took advantage of the darkness to flee the scene, abandoning the vehicle. A meticulous search of the crashed Bolero revealed approximately 50 kg of suspected ganja.
In another incident, the Sonitpur Police, led by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tezpur and the In-Charge (IC) of Kacharigaon, acted on specific intelligence to intercept a woman named Babita Boro (40), wife of the late Sambar Boro, from Majbat Town. Boro was attempting to smuggle approximately 10 kg of suspected ganja from Mazbat, Udalguri to Goroimari via a public bus. She was apprehended at the Mission Chariali Bus Stand in Tezpur. The contraband was seized, and Boro was taken into custody for further questioning.
These consecutive operations demonstrate the Sonitpur Police’s alertness and effectiveness in combating the drug problem. The confiscations not only interrupt the immediate distribution of illegal substances but also aid in the larger goal of identifying and capturing the networks responsible for these smuggling efforts.
