Veterinary Officers of Sonitpur Gain Advanced Wildlife and Health Management Training in Dehradun

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, hosted a transformative 10-day Orientation Program on Wildlife and Health Management for Assam’s veterinary officers, commencing February 3, 2025. This initiative, which focused on addressing the region’s unique wildlife conservation challenges, was attended by 24 veterinarians from Assam.

Prominent participants included Dr. Abhilasha Sharma, Veterinary Officer of Khelmati, and Dr. Amarjyoti Boro, Block Veterinary Officer of Dhekiajuli. These professionals were selected by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department (AHVD) and Forest Department, respectively, underscoring interdepartmental collaboration in safeguarding Assam’s wildlife.

The program offered hands-on field training tailored to the state’s specific needs, with a curriculum encompassing preventive and clinical healthcare for wildlife, conflict management, and strategies for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Another critical component addressed combating wildlife crime, a pressing concern in the region.

Beyond classroom sessions, participants had the opportunity to visit cutting-edge facilities across the country, gaining practical insights and exposure to advanced practices in wildlife health management. This experience aimed to equip Sonitpur’s veterinary officers with the expertise and tools needed to tackle conservation challenges effectively.
