Tezpur hosts Launch of Yachting Association of Assam: A new era in Water Sports Development

Tezpur, June 27, 2025 (Friday): Assam took a major step forward in water sports development today with the formation of the Yachting Association of Assam (YAA), marking the beginning of organized sailing activities in the state.

The new association held its first general meeting in Tezpur on June 27, 2025, where members elected a complete executive committee to lead yachting development across the state. This move aims to tap into Assam’s rich network of rivers and water bodies to create new sporting opportunities.

The association appointed Devasish Sharma, an IAS officer, as its first president. Karabi Saikia Karan, from the Assam Civil Service (ACS), will serve as Senior Vice President. The executive committee includes five vice presidents: Lakhinandan Saharia (ACS), Kabita Kakati (ACS), Pranjit Boruah, Irish Ahmed (ACS), and Tangkwswar Ojha. Pranjal Dehingia was chosen as General Secretary, with Popir Pait as Joint Secretary and Lawnita Borah handling finances as Treasurer.

Seven executive members complete the team: Nikhamoni Bora, N. Shankar Rao, Priyanka Thakuria, Amarjyoti Bhagabati, Birinchi Pran Konwar, Debasish Hazarika, and Prithiraj Mahanta. The new association has set ambitious goals for developing yachting in Assam. Leaders say they want to use the state’s many rivers and lakes to build a strong sailing community.

During a conversation with Tezpur Buzz, the General Secretary of the Yachting Association of Assam expressed great optimism about the future of aquatic sports in the region. “We see huge potential in Assam’s water resources,” he noted, emphasizing the untapped opportunities offered by the state’s abundant rivers and natural water bodies. Highlighting Assam’s strategic position and its scenic waterways, he added, “Our state can become a major center for water sports in Northeast India.” The YAA plans to start training programs for beginners and experienced sailors alike. They also want to build proper facilities and organize regular sailing competitions to get young people interested in the sport.

The association doesn’t plan to work alone. They want to partner with sailing organizations across India and around the world to bring international standards to Assam’s yachting scene. These partnerships could help bring expert trainers, modern equipment, and international competitions to the state. This would give local sailors chances to compete at higher levels and learn from the best.

The YAA’s first priorities include setting up basic infrastructure for sailing activities and creating beginner-friendly training programs. They plan to identify suitable water bodies across Assam where sailing can be practiced safely. The association also wants to reach out to schools and colleges to introduce young people to sailing. They believe water sports can teach important life skills like teamwork, discipline, and confidence.

With strong leadership from government officials and sports enthusiasts, the Yachting Association of Assam is ready to make sailing a popular and accessible sport in the state. This development could open new career paths for young athletes and put Assam on the map as a destination for water sports tourism.

The formation of YAA represents more than just another sports organization, it shows Assam’s commitment to expanding beyond traditional sports and embracing new opportunities that match the state’s natural advantages.
