Tezpur Cancer Centre commenced Brachytherapy facility under Anaesthesia

Tezpur Cancer Centre (TCC) – a unit of Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) under Government of Assam and the TATA Trusts, was inaugurated by Hon’ble PM of India Shri Narendra Modi ji on 28th April 2022. In the last two year, TCC completed 10171 Radiotherapy sessions to 486 patients, 6080 Chemotherapy, and did many CT/MRI scans/Mammography. Today, TCC has started world class Brachytherapy services on 30th April 2024, which is another major milestone in cancer care. The first Intracavitary Brachytherapy under general anesthesia was successfully done by Dr. Sanjeev K. Gupta (Senior Consultant & Head, Dept. of Clinical Oncology), Dr Anil Koiry (Anesthesiologist), Dr. Suhas V Navada (Associate Consultant) and team. Dr. Sanjib Hazarika (Medical Superintendent, TCC) congratulated Dr. Sanjeev K. Gupta & team on this occasion.

Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy where a radioactive source is inserted near tumors to eliminate and shrink tumors. About 80% of brachytherapy sessions contribute to cervical cancer (which is cancer of the lowest part of the uterus), and the remaining to uterus, vagina, esophagus, head and neck, breast cancers, etc. According to a report by BioMed Central, Breast and Cervical Cancers are extremely common amongst women and India amounts to 27% of the global cervical cancer cases (about 1.3 Lakh cases per year). In India, the practice of brachytherapy is still not widespread, except at a few elite and private institutions. Hopefully, this Brachytherapy facility at TCC will be beneficial to the cancer patients of district Sonitpur, nearby districts like Biswanath, Nagaon, Udalguri, and some parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
