Tezpur University’s Law Department organised a Legal Awareness Camp to empower school students

In a bid to empower school students with crucial insights into their rights and responsibilities, Tezpur University’s Department of Law organised a comprehensive legal awareness programme at Madhav Dev Sishu Niketan, Napaam on 26th April. More than 200 students, ranging from nursery to class X, participated in the day-long event. While addressing the gathering, Dr. Madhumita Acharjee, Head of the Department of Law, underscored the inclusive nature of the event, emphasising its significance in educating students from diverse age groups.

Dr. Gitanjali Ghosh, an Associate Professor at the Department of Law at Tezpur University, highlighted the importance of informed citizenship and equitable justice. She said: “Our aim was to enhance public awareness of laws and rights concerning children.” Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Principal of Madhav Dev Sishu Niketan, expressed gratitude to Tezpur University’s Department of Law for its relentless efforts to amplify awareness of these vital issues. The camp featured street plays performed by second and fourth-semester students of the Master of Laws (LLM) programme.

These plays addressed pressing issues such as sexual harassment of minors, child labour, and waste management. These enactments were strategically crafted to raise awareness among the students. Second-year LLM students took the stage to deliver speeches, exploring various legal themes. Ruma Bora emphasised “Child Labor and Right to Education,” while Debojit Kaushik delved into the “Laws Regarding Sexual Offenses Against Children and Provision of Free Legal Aid in India.” Jigyasa Jaiswal elucidated the “Role of Independent Judiciary in Upholding Justice.” Priyanka P. Gogoi, a second-year LLM student, served as the compère for the event. Ramani Borah, a teacher at the school, conveyed “sincere appreciation” to the university students and teachers.
