The Department of Physics, Tezpur University in association with the Gender in Physics Working Group (GIPWG) of Indian Physics Association has organised a two-day workshop ‘Woman Empowerment – Career Opportunities in Science (WE-COS)’, from November 19, 2024.
Noted physicist Prof. Srubabati Goswami from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad graced the occasion. Other distinguished guests included Prof. V. Madhurima, former director of Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Central University of Tamil Nadu, and Dr. Bulumoni Kalita from Dibrugarh University.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, emphasized the crucial role of women in science. He stated, “Science is not just about understanding the world around us; it’s about shaping the future. Therefore, without the contribution of women in science, many of the challenges we face cannot be addressed.”
Prof. Srubabati Goswami highlighted the significant gender gap in scientific professions, particularly in physics. She stressed the need to address the complex root causes of this gap both locally and globally.
The workshop featured interactive sessions and panel discussions. Dr. Moon Moon Devi, the local convenor, discussed career opportunities in science. Prof. V. Madhurima, Prof. Nidhi S. Bhattacharyya, and Dr. Rupjyoti Gogoi from the Department of Physics, along with other faculty members, explored strategies for promoting inclusivity in science.
Students and faculty members from various institutions, including Biswanath College, Tezpur College, Darrang College, and different departments of Tezpur University, participated in the event.
