The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Sonitpur, in collaboration with Edupur Society, Tezpur, launched a disaster preparedness campaign titled “Surokhit Axomor Babe Bator Nat” (A Path for a Safe Assam) at a ceremonial event held on January 4, 2025, at Tezpur Court Chariali. The campaign, which will run from January 4 to January 21, 2025, aims to raise awareness about natural disaster preparedness through a series of street plays.
The campaign was inaugurated by the Honourable MLA of Tezpur Legislative Assembly Constituency, Shri Prithiraj Rava. The ceremony was attended by several notable dignitaries, including Shri Ankur Bharali, District Commissioner cum Chairperson of DDMA, Sonitpur; Shri Barun Purkayastha, Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur; Smti. Karabi Saikia Karan, CEO, Sonitpur Zilla Parishad; Shri Garga Mohan Das, Additional DC cum CEO of DDMA; Shri Bibek Mahato, DRR Consultant, ASDMA; renowned Assamese actor Shri Arun Nath; celebrated dancer and actor Smti. Krishna Das Nath; Shri Bankim Sharma, President of Ban Theatre; and wildlife conservationist Shri Saurav Borkataki.
The event featured a ceremonial street play performance that marked the beginning of the awareness campaign. Following the ceremony, a street play van was flagged off, which will travel across Tezpur, Dhekiajuli, Naduar, Thelamara, and Chariduar revenue circles. Throughout the campaign, over 50 street plays will be performed to educate the public about the importance of disaster preparedness, particularly focusing on natural disasters like floods and lightning. Additionally, the campaign will include loudspeaker announcements and the distribution of informational leaflets to further disseminate crucial information.
The inaugural event witnessed enthusiastic participation from dignitaries, officials, members of Edupur Society, local students, and the general public, all united by the common goal of building a safer Assam.
