Brahmaputra River flowing above normal to severe flood situation in Sonitpur District

Due to past 4 to 5 days rainfall, Brahmaputra main river is flowing in above normal flood situations to severe flood situations in Sonitpur, Goalpara, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup & Jorhat districts (Assam). Also tributaries of Brahmaputra namely Beki river in Barpeta district, Jia-Bharali river in Sonitpur and Sankosh river in Dhubri (Assam); Torsa river in Coochbihar, Teesta river in Jalpaiguri (West Bengal); Siang River in east Siang (Arunachal Pradesh) are flowing in above normal flood situations to severe flood situations. River Kushiyara is flowing in above normal situations in Karimganj (Assam).

The water level has also risen significantly here in Tezpur, which is evident at Ganesh Ghat. Low lying areas of the District are believed to be inundated.

IMD has predicted heavy rainfall, hence alert may be kept in districts Baska (West Bengal); South Sikkim, East Sikkim (Sikkim); Chirag, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Kokrajhar (Assam); North & East Kameng, Upper & East Siang and Lower Subansiri (Arunachal Predesh).

Hence heavy rainfall is expected in upper and middle Brahmaputra basin and tributaries such as Teesta, Sankosh, Jaldhaka, Torsa, Manas, Beki, Raidak, Aie, Kaldiya, Puthimari, Dhansiri in next 2 to 3 days due to this, the river levels in many of these rivers are likely to rise.
