Tezpur, Feb 12 : The Tezpur University Cricket Ground, developed by Assam Cricket Association, was today inaugurated by Professor Vinod Kumar Jain, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Tezpur University in the presence of Shri Romen Dutta, President, Assam Cricket Association; Shri Devajit Saikia, Secretary, Assam Cricket Association; Shri Porikshit Dutta, Vice-President, Assam Cricket Association; Shri Kamakhya Saikia, Joint Secretary, Assam Cricket Association; Shri Tapash Chakraborty, Apex Council Member, Assam Cricket Association; Shri Rupkamal Kakati, President, Tezpur Sports Association; Shri D. Deka, Dean of Students’ Welfare, Tezpur University; former cricketers of Assam and many cricket enthusiasts.
Assam Cricket Association has developed the Tezpur University Cricket Ground including 3 centre wickets and 2 practice wickets as part of an MOU inked between the former with the latter in the year 2020. It is this newly developed venue, along with the Assam Agricultural University Ground in Jorhat – which has also been developed by Assam Cricket Association – that will host the first-of-its-kind Inter-University Tournament to be organised by Assam Cricket Association in memory of Late Nilay Dutta, International Umpire, Former Acting President, Assam Cricket Association and noted legal luminary, from February 13, 2022.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Devajit Saikia, Secretary, Assam Cricket Association asserted that the Tezpur University Cricket Ground would provide the right platform to the students of the Tezpur University as well as the cricket enthusiasts from Tezpur and its adjoining areas to showcase and hone their cricketing skills. Praising the ground, he said that the ground has the makings of becoming a BCCI domestic venue, and expressed hope to that effect.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Vinod Kumar Jain, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Tezpur University thanked Assam Cricket Association for filling the longstanding vacuum, and developing a proper cricket ground, which was the need of the hour. He expressed hope that the students of the University would make optimum utilisation of the newly developed ground, and use it to their advantage.
Earlier, Shri Romen Dutta, President, Assam Cricket Association informed that the initiative was a part of the series of cricket infrastructural development projects undertaken by Assam Cricket Association across the the State to take the game of Cricket to every nook and cranny of Assam. He further informed that thus far, 18 such ambitious projects have been undertaken by Assam Cricket Association in the State.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by a friendly 13-over match between ACA President XI and Tezpur University VC XI, in which the former emerged victorious. Tezpur University
