The supply of piped natural gas (PNG) connections in Tezpur has been launched under the initiative of the North-East Gas Distribution Company Ltd. (NEGDCL), marking a significant step towards strengthening urban infrastructure and promoting the use of clean energy. The initiative aims to provide households with safe, convenient, and eco-friendly PNG, improving the quality of life for residents while supporting environmentally sustainable development in the town.
According to officials, Goroimari will be the first locality in Tezpur to receive the gasline connection. A trial run of the pipeline network has already been successfully completed, and gas connections have been allotted to 10 households in the initial phase.
During a press conference held to mark the launch of the project, NEGDCL officials stated that the underground pipeline-laying work across most parts of the town is nearly complete. Gas connections will now be provided to households in a phased manner.
The project aims to provide PNG connections to approximately 65,000 households in Tezpur within the next three years. Officials noted that while applying for the gasline connection is not compulsory, residents are encouraged to adopt the facility because of its safety, convenience and environmental benefits.
Residents interested in availing themselves of the service can apply through the official website of NEGDCL. A registration fee of ₹1,100 is required, which includes ₹100 for registration and ₹1,000 as a refundable gas security deposit. After successful registration, NEGDCL team members will contact applicants to complete the connection process. Two helpline numbers have also been made available to assist residents with queries and the registration procedure.
According to company officials, the project will initially prioritise household consumers. In later phases, gas connections may also be extended to hotels, commercial establishments and industrial units, expanding the benefits of piped natural gas across multiple sectors of the local economy.
The project has been initiated by NEGDCL with the support of the Government of Assam and is expected to play a key role in building a greener and more sustainable urban environment in Tezpur.
