The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have unleashed devastating floods in Sonitpur district following days of relentless rainfall. The situation remains critical in several areas, particularly within Tezpur LAC, where locations such as Tol-Gereki, Bishnu Rabha Samadhi Kshetra, and the areas surrounding Hanuman and Bhairabi temples have been severely impacted. Many families have been forced to seek refuge at the relief camps or move to higher ground with their livestock. The flooding has also affected numerous villages in the Chariduar, Dhekiajuli, Thelamara, and Naduar revenue circles, displacing thousands of residents. District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra reported that over 5,800 people have been affected across these circles, prompting the establishment of eight relief camps to provide essential supplies to those in need.
The floods have wrought significant damage in the region. A major PWD road in the Batomari Convention Center area has been breached, isolating local residents. Tragically, two individuals have drowned in the Brahmaputra floodwaters, and seven wild elephants lost their lives while attempting to cross the river. The crisis has even driven wildlife into urban areas, with a herd of elephants spotted roaming the streets of Tezpur in search of higher ground. Local authorities, including MLA Prithiraj Rabha, are working closely with the district administration to relocate affected individuals to safe locations and provide necessary relief. As the situation continues to evolve, officials remain vigilant in their efforts to address this ongoing crisis and mitigate its impact on both human and animal populations.
