Scammers posing as Mahindra recruiters have plastered fake job posters across Tezpur, Biswanath, and Lakhimpur in Assam, luring job seekers into a phone-based fraud.
A sophisticated employment scam impersonating automobile giant Mahindra has emerged across multiple districts in Assam, with fraudsters demanding upfront fees from unsuspecting job candidates through a network of misleading posters and telephone operations.

The scam, which has surfaced in Tezpur, Biswanath, and Lakhimpur, came to light when several jobseekers approached Mahabhairav Auto Limited, Mahindra’s authorised dealer in Tezpur, to enquire about advertised vacancies. The dealer confirmed it had issued no such recruitment notifications.
Posters bearing Mahindra’s branding have been spotted throughout high-footfall areas, particularly around Chowk Bazaar in Tezpur, prompting concerned residents to contact the legitimate dealership. The scale of the operation suggests involvement of an organised racket rather than isolated fraudsters.
Zharna Das, HR Manager at Mahabhairav Auto Limited, spoke about the discovery: “We received numerous enquiries both in person and over the phone regarding job vacancies. When one of our employees spotted the fraudulent poster, we investigated and found the operation to be massive in scale.”

The dealer’s staff contacted the numbers listed on the posters to understand the mechanics of the scam. “The entire operation runs via telephone. They demand a registration fee upfront to qualify for employment. When we asked for their main office location, they refused to provide an exact address, only mentioning somewhere in Bihar,” Zharna Das explained.
According to reports, the scammers initially charge Rs 590 as a registration fee. They then provide fabricated offer letters and medical appointment letters before demanding an additional Rs 1,260 as eligibility fees. The total number of victims remains unknown, though authorities suspect many more may have been targeted for further payments.
“We have filed an FIR against this scam and request the authorities to act swiftly before more people fall victim,” Zharna Das stated. The dealership has confirmed with Mahindra’s corporate office that the company has not authorised any such recruitment drive and is prepared to pursue legal action.

The fraudulent agency has been using Mahindra’s district addresses without authorisation, lending false credibility to their operation. Similar activity has also been reported at Mahindra’s dealer location in Lakhimpur.
Stay Alert: Protect Yourself from Job Scams
Jobseekers are urged to exercise extreme caution when responding to employment advertisements. Legitimate companies never demand upfront payments for job applications, registration, or offer letters. Always verify vacancies directly through official company websites or authorised dealerships before sharing personal information or money. Be wary of recruiters who refuse to provide verifiable office addresses or conduct business exclusively over the phone. If an opportunity seems too good to be true or involves any form of advance payment, it is almost certainly fraudulent. Report suspicious activity to local police immediately and warn others in your community to prevent them from falling victim to such rackets.
