Tezpur honours Lachit Borphukan with Tree Planting, Heritage Walk and Cleanliness Drive

Tezpur, November 24, 2025 (Monday): Tezpur came together to commemorate Lachit Divas with a series of events organised by environmental activist, educational institutions and student organisations, paying tribute to Assam’s legendary warrior Lachit Borphukan.

The day’s observances began with a significant tree planting initiative led by District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das at the Government Residence, where he planted a rare Nag Champa sapling. The programme, organised by snake-friend Saurav Borkataki’s team, also included the planting of Nahar saplings at Chitralekha Udyan.

Speaking on the occasion, Saurav Borkataki highlighted the medicinal importance of Nag Champa, commonly known as the ‘Cannonball’ tree, which belongs to the Brazil-nut family. “Since ancient times, Nag Champa has made an important contribution to mankind due to its medicinal properties,” he said, noting the tree’s antibiotic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and numerous other therapeutic qualities.

Saurav Borkataki revealed that a personal survey conducted across Assam found only about seven Nag Champa trees in the entire state, making this planting effort particularly significant for conservation. District Commissioner Das commended the initiative, praising Borkataki for his noble work in preserving rare plant species.

The planting programme saw participation from team members including president Puspadeka, vice-president Machinur Rahman, advisor Tutumoni Kalita, and snake-friends Bapadhan Das and Bishal Mahato.

Meanwhile, the Department of History organised a heritage walk and invited lecture to mark the occasion, offering citizens an opportunity to connect with Assam’s rich historical legacy and the valour of Lachit Borphukan.

Adding to the spirit of service, the Darrang College Students’ Union, in collaboration with the NSS and NCC units, conducted a cleanliness drive at the Darrang College premises, demonstrating that honouring heroes also means keeping their legacy alive through community service.

The diverse range of activities across Tezpur reflected the enduring inspiration of Lachit Borphukan, whose leadership during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 remains a symbol of Assamese pride and courage.
