Sanjay Malhotra Appointed as New RBI Governor
Sanjay Malhotra, the current Revenue Secretary, has been appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by the Government of India. He will succeed Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure is set to end on December 10, 2024. Malhotra will become the 26th Governor of India’s central bank, starting his three-year term on December 11, 2024. He prepares to take over from Shaktikanta Das, who has led the central bank since 2018.
Sanjay Malhotra is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1990 batch of the Rajasthan Cadre. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur and a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA. Throughout his career spanning over 33 years, Malhotra has served in various sectors, including power, finance, taxation, information technology, and mines.
Before his current role as Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Malhotra served as the Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He has also represented the financial services department on the RBI board.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the selection of the 56-year-old Malhotra as the next RBI Governor. Known for his analytical skills, Malhotra has been a trusted aide of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, providing valuable insights on revenue trends and advocating for a balanced approach in tax enforcement.
