
Sonitpur, August 3, 2025 (Sunday): Sonitpur marked its 42nd District Day today with colorful celebrations and meaningful events held across the region. The district was officially formed on August 3, 1983, when the Assam government separated it from Darrang district and made Tezpur its headquarters.
Morning Walkathon Kicks Off Celebrations
The day began early with an energetic walkathon at 6 AM from Ananda Chandra Agarwala Park in Tezpur. District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das and Additional District Commissioner Shri Kamal Baruah flagged off the event. The walkathon was organized as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
More than 250 school children joined the walkathon along with senior officials including Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Assistant Commissioner, Joint Director of Health Services, and other district officers. Their participation filled the event with energy and enthusiasm.
Cultural Celebrations in Dhekiajuli
A vibrant celebration took place at Swahid Smarak Udyan in Dhekiajuli, graced by Hon’ble Health and Family Welfare Minister Shri Ashok Singhal, who is also the local MLA. The event featured a special painting session and exhibition displaying works by well-known artists from Dhekiajuli, adding artistic flair to the celebrations.
Minister Shri Singhal addressed the gathering and was joined by several key officials including Co-District Commissioner Smti. Dyotiva Bora, Dhekiajuli Municipal Board Chairperson Smt. Sushmita Das, CDSP Shri Bhargav Moni Das, Assistant Commissioner Shri Rathish Bora, and Circle Officer Shri Nayan Jyoti Pathak.
Speaking about the occasion, Minister Singhal later wrote on his X page: “It was truly a pleasure to attend the vibrant celebration of Sonitpur District Day at the Swahid Smarak Auditorium in Dhekiajuli today on the occasion of the district’s foundation day. Sonitpur’s enduring contribution to Assam’s social and cultural fabric is unparalleled. On this special occasion, I extend warm greetings to all my brothers and sisters, and pay tribute to the pioneers whose dedication and sacrifice shaped the Sonitpur we cherish today.”
Health Initiatives for Senior Citizens
As part of the District Day celebrations, a special health checkup and hepatitis screening camp was organized for senior citizens at IRCS, SDB Building, Ganeshghat. The camp was conducted by the Indian Red Cross Society, Sonitpur District Branch, working together with the Sonitpur District Administration.
Hon’ble MLA of Tezpur LAC Shri Prithiraj Rava inaugurated the health camp. The event was attended by ADC (Health) Shri Twahir Alam, Assistant Commissioner Iris Arman Ahmed, Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Jagadish Goswami, and Dr. Biswaranjan Kalita, a veteran sportsperson and President of Sonitpur Senior Citizen Association.
Blood Donation Drive Shows Community Spirit
The Marwari Yuva Mancha, Tezpur Branch, organized a blood donation camp at Kanaklata Civil Hospital in partnership with the Sonitpur District Administration. District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das inaugurated the camp along with ADC (Health) Twahir Alam, Assistant Commissioner Shri Nilutpal Chetia, and Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Jagadish Goswami.
Many generous donors participated in this noble cause, showing the strong community spirit that defines Sonitpur district.
