Tezpur, June 4 : The counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections began at 8 AM on June 4, 2024. The election, which spanned seven phases from April 19 to June 1, aimed to fill 543 seats.
The parliamentary elections in Assam were conducted in three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7. In Assam, the election results will determine the fate of 14 seats. The Sonitpur Lok Sabha constituency participated in the first phase of voting on April 19, 2024.

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a notable decline from its 2019 performance when it won 303 seats, as reported by the Election Commission. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) collectively garnered a total of 292 seats.
To form a government at the Centre, any party or alliance needs 272 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The Congress made significant gains, winning 99 seats, up from 52 seats in 2019. Meanwhile, the Opposition INDIA bloc collectively secured 232 seats.

To ensure smooth and safe counting procedures at Darrang College, Tezpur, the following guidelines have been issued:
- Gathering and parking of vehicles are prohibited within 100 meters of the counting centres.
- Only individuals with a valid ID card (issued by ECI or Parliamentary Election I-Card Cell) are allowed entry.
- No sharp weapons, sticks, or objects that could be used as weapons are permitted.
- Temporary food stalls and shops are banned within a 100-meter radius.
- Firecrackers and inflammable materials are not allowed on the streets.
- Public rallies, processions, demonstrations, and slogan shouting without permission are prohibited.
