In a reassuring move, the Meghalaya government on Thursday put to rest speculations about a ban on tourist vehicles from Assam entering the state. State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh addressed the media in Shillong, clarifying that there is no intention to restrict tourist vehicles from Assam or other states from visiting Meghalaya’s tourist destinations.
Lyngdoh emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a balance in the entry of tourist vehicles from outside the state, ensuring a smooth experience for visitors. He also announced plans to convene a meeting with all stakeholders to further discuss the matter.
The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association had earlier urged the government to ban tourist vehicles from Assam and other parts of the country, except for Shillong, to protect the income of local taxi drivers in Meghalaya. However, the Meghalaya Police swiftly clarified that there were no restrictions on tourist vehicles registered in Assam from visiting tourist spots in the hilly state.
For tourists planning to visit Meghalaya, this assurance means they can continue their travel plans without concern. The state’s welcoming stance ensures a smooth journey for those eager to explore popular destinations like Cherrapunji, Nongriat, and Dawki.
