Tezpur, July 1, 2025 (Tuesday): A new chapter in Assam’s water sports development began today with the launch of the state’s first Basic Windsurfing Camp at Hazarapar Stadium in Tezpur. The camp brings together 30 young athletes from across the state to learn the fundamentals of this exciting water sport. The camp is a joint effort between the Yachting Association of Assam (YAA) and the Office of the District Sports Officer, Sonitpur.
The main goal of this camp is to introduce windsurfing to young people across Assam and help find those with natural talent for the sport. Participants will receive professional training from expert coaches who will teach them the basic skills needed for windsurfing. The camp is not just about learning a new sport; it aims to create a strong foundation for water sports in Assam and to prepare athletes who can compete at the state and national levels in the future

The opening ceremony saw impressive attendance from several important officials and sports leaders, showing the strong support this initiative has received:
- Ritubaran Sharma, President of Sonitpur District Archery Association
- Jiten Borah, General Secretary of Tezpur District Sports Association
- Karabi Karan Saikia, ACS, CEO of Zilla Parishad and Senior Vice President of Yachting Association of Assam
- Lakhinandan Chaharia, ACS, Vice President of Yachting Association of Assam
- Kabita Kakoti Knowr, ACS, Vice President of Yachting Association of Assam
- Pranjal Dehingia, General Secretary of Yachting Association of Assam

The presence of these respected leaders gave great encouragement to the young participants and showed the importance placed on developing water sports in the state.
This windsurfing camp represents an important step forward for sports development in Assam. Until now, water sports have not been widely promoted in the state, making this initiative particularly significant.

The camp will continue over several days, with participants receiving hands-on training in windsurfing techniques, safety procedures, and equipment handling. Expert trainers will work closely with each participant to ensure they get the best possible foundation in the sport.
The success of this camp could pave the way for more water sports programs across Assam. By starting with basic training and identifying talented young athletes, the state is building a pipeline of potential competitors who could represent Assam in future state and national competitions.
