Assam is grappling with severe flooding, affecting over 21 lakh people across 29 districts and claiming 52 lives. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the entire region, as heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers, including the Brahmaputra, exacerbate the crisis. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited affected areas, attributing the devastating second wave of floods to cloudbursts in neighboring regions and heavy downpours in China, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh. The floods have also impacted wildlife, with about 80% of Kaziranga National Park submerged.
Government officials are working to expedite relief distribution and rehabilitation efforts, with over 39,000 people currently sheltered in relief camps. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the need for a long-term solution, proposing a comprehensive study on Dibrugarh’s techno-economic feasibility to develop an effective flood mitigation strategy. The floods have damaged croplands, houses, and infrastructure, prompting authorities to issue alerts in various districts and advise caution near riverfronts.
In Tezpur, the flood situation is worsening daily. The Brahmaputra River is expected to rise by 40-70 cm by July 7 evening, further intensifying concerns for the area. Local authorities are on high alert and advising residents to take necessary precautions.
