Jamugurihat mourns the passing of Veteran Social Organizer Sarbeswar Hazarika

Jamugurihat, October 27, 2025 (Monday): The Jamugurihat region is in deep mourning following the passing of Sarbeswar Hazarika, a veteran social organizer, activist, and lifelong community leader from Dekasundar. Sarbeswar Hazarika breathed his last in the early hours of Sunday while undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). He was 85.
Born and raised in Dekasundar, Sarbeswar Hazarika dedicated his life to community welfare and the cultural enrichment of the region. In the 1970s, he served as the Founder Secretary of the Jamuguri Chamber of Commerce, laying the foundation for local trade and cooperative development. Over the years, he became a guiding force for numerous socio-cultural organizations in and around Jamugurihat.
Sarbeswar Hazarika’s leadership extended to several key institutions and community initiatives. He was the President of the Dekasundar Village Development Committee (VDC) and played prominent roles in landmark events such as the golden and silver jubilee celebrations of the Dekasundar Bohagi Mela. His commitment to public service and grassroots development earned him immense respect across generations.

In the wake of his demise, representatives of various organizations, including the Dekasundar VDC, Baresohoriya Raij Sabha, Dekasundar Mahila Samiti, Jamuguri Chamber of Commerce, Senior Citizens Forum (Jamugurihat chapter), Sudarshan Sanskritik Gosthi, Natun Sahitya Parishad (Jamuguri regional committee), Abhijatri Kala Kendra, and Srimanta Sankardev Samaj, visited his residence to pay homage before the last rites were performed.
As a mark of respect, all commercial establishments in the Jamugurihat area remained closed from 6 to 11 a.m. today. His passing is widely regarded as the end of an era devoted to social welfare, cultural preservation, and grassroots leadership in the region. Sarbeswar Hazarika leaves behind his wife, three daughters and a wide circle of relatives and admirers who continue to draw inspiration from his lifelong service to society.
