In response to the recent r#pe case in Dhing and other incidents of molestation and se#ual assault in Tezpur, Lakhimpur, and various parts of Assam, a strong protest was held on August 24,2024 at Poruwa Chariali in Tezpur by the Sonitpur District Students’ Union under the aegis of AASU.
The protesters demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators, urging the administration to take decisive action to prevent such heinous acts from recurring.The demonstration focused on the severe psychological impact these crimes have on victims, who are often left mentally scarred for life. Participants expressed deep concern over the growing number of such incidents in Assam, a state traditionally known for its reverence for goddesses, including at the sacred Maa Kamakhya shrine.
The protest also called for the implementation of awareness programs in educational institutions across the state, aiming to create a safer environment for women and girls and to curb the rising tide of sexual violence.
