Sonitpur, July 23, 2025 (Wednesday): Tezpur witnessed a change in leadership last week when Shri Ananda Kumar Das, ACS (DR-95), officially took charge as the new District Commissioner of Sonitpur on July 24, 2025. The experienced administrator, who previously served as Secretary to the Government of Assam in the Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department, has wasted no time in getting familiar with his new role.
The officers and staff at the DC Office welcomed Ananda Kumar Das with a warm reception as he stepped into the shoes of Shri Ankur Bharali, ACS (DR-99), who has been transferred to serve as Director of Sports & Youth Welfare for Assam.

Just two days after taking charge, the new DC began his hands-on approach to administration. On July 26, Ananda Kumar Das conducted his first major inspection visit to the under-construction District Library and Baan Theatre in Tezpur. Accompanied by ADC cum CDC Naduar, Shri Manash Kumar Saikia, and PWD Building officials, he carefully reviewed the progress of these important cultural projects.
During this visit, Ananda Kumar Das examined the current work status and addressed concerns about the pace of construction. He gave clear directions to officials to ensure both projects are completed on time and meet the approved standards. This early focus on cultural infrastructure shows his commitment to enhancing Tezpur’s educational and entertainment facilities.
The new DC’s third day in office, July 27, was particularly busy as he conducted multiple important visits that highlighted his priorities for public welfare and development.
His first stop was the Central Jail in Tezpur, where he conducted a thorough review of the facility’s conditions. Ananda Kumar Das inspected several key areas including the kitchen and food quality for inmates, cleanliness standards, living conditions, and rehabilitation programs. Accompanied by Assistant Commissioner cum In-Charge Superintendent Shri Arunav Borkotoky and other jail officials, he stressed the importance of maintaining humane living conditions and meaningful rehabilitation for inmates.
Later the same day, Ananda Kumar Das visited Kanaklata Civil Hospital, one of Tezpur’s most important healthcare facilities. This visit demonstrated his commitment to improving public health services in the district. He was joined by ADC (Health) Twahir Alam, Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Jagadish Goswami, and Hospital Superintendent Dr. Hiranjan Saikia.
During his hospital inspection, Ananda Kumar Das reviewed the infrastructure, patient services, and coordination between different departments. He gave specific instructions to hospital authorities focusing on three main areas: ensuring 24/7 patient services, maintaining high cleanliness and hygiene standards, and solving power supply issues that could affect patient care.
Ananda Kumar Das concluded his busy day with an inspection of four major ongoing development projects that will significantly impact Tezpur’s future. These projects include the construction of Tezpur Chowk Bazar under CIDF, the Integrated Sports Complex at Hazarapara with waterfront development, a new Town Hall cum Auditorium with 1000 seating capacity under UIDF, and the beautification of Borpukhuri.
Executive Engineer Shri Rituparna Bhattacharyya from the Department of Housing & Urban Affairs accompanied the DC during this comprehensive review. The inspection focused on checking current work progress, identifying and solving implementation problems, and ensuring all projects are completed on time with good quality.
Ananda Kumar Das’s rapid and comprehensive approach to his new role sends a clear message about his administrative style. Within just three days, he has covered crucial areas including cultural development, jail administration, healthcare, and major infrastructure projects. This demonstrates his understanding that effective district administration requires attention to all aspects of public life.
His emphasis on timely completion of projects, quality standards, and public welfare indicates that Sonitpur district can expect focused leadership in the coming months. The new DC’s previous experience in food distribution and consumer affairs, combined with his quick start in Tezpur, suggests that residents can look forward to improved public services and faster development progress.
The district administration’s commitment to better healthcare delivery and infrastructure development under Ananda Kumar Das’s leadership promises positive changes for the people of Sonitpur.
