Sonitpur This Week: This week of October saw Sonitpur buzzing with activity, as the district witnessed a series of significant developments spanning law enforcement recognition, wildlife conservation efforts, government welfare initiatives, sports events and public health campaigns.
October 6: National Recognition for Cybercrime Prevention
The week began on a high note with Shri Barun Purkayastha, IPS, SSP of Sonitpur Police, receiving the Best Performing Officer 2024-25 award from FICCI India CASCADE at MASCRADE 2025 in New Delhi. The recognition honoured his team’s exceptional work in combating cybercrime and dismantling mule account networks.

October 7: Welfare Launch and Wildlife Conservation Honours
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma launched Orunodoi 3.0 from Guwahati, marking a significant milestone for social welfare. Sonitpur participated virtually across five Legislative Assembly Constituencies covering 1,151 polling stations, with approximately 41,426 beneficiaries enrolling in the program, a testament to the state government’s commitment to inclusive growth.
Wildlife conservation efforts received well-deserved recognition on the same day. The Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change presented a Certificate of Appreciation to SI Priyanka Buragohain, IC Borsola, for her dedicated work in protecting wildlife at Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve.
During the 71st Wildlife Week 2025 celebrations, Dr. Amarjyoti Boro, Veterinary Officer in Dhekiajuli, was similarly honoured for his contributions to wildlife conservation at Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve.
October 8: Wildlife Week Celebrations
Wildlife Week 2025 celebrations continued across Biswanath Wildlife Division and Sonitpur East Division. In collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF-India) and Assam Wildlife Rescue and Research Organization (AWRRO), community events included seedling distribution, awareness rallies, and a friendly cricket match to engage local residents in conservation efforts.
October 9: Territorial Army Day, Herbal Garden, and Weightlifting Championship
The 76th Territorial Army Day witnessed the inauguration of the 134ETF Herbal Garden & Medicinal Park by MLA Mr. Padma Hazarika. Established by the 134 Ecological Task Force, the park has emerged as the Northeast’s finest, housing over 300 indigenous species and serving as a valuable resource for herbal medicine and biodiversity conservation.
District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das graced the 53rd All Assam Weightlifting Championship 2025 held at Hem Baruah Hall, Tezpur. The championship, organized by Sonitpur District Weightlifting Association in collaboration with Asomiya Club and Sonitpur District Bodybuilders Association under the aegis of the Assam Weightlifting Association, saw the District Commissioner inspiring athletes and appreciating the organizers for their dedication towards promoting sports and fitness in the district.
October 10: Health Camps and Mental Health Awareness
A LAC-wise Mega Health Camp for Tezpur under “Susrusha Setu 2025” was held as part of the “Seva Hi Samarpan: Seva Saptah” initiative. Inaugurated by MLA Shri Prithiraj Rava in the presence of District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das at Tezpur Government Higher Secondary School, the camp offered free health screening for children aged 0–18 years, covering 59 diseases and general wellness checks. Also at the same venue, Marking World Mental Health Day, the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) Sonitpur organized a street play on mental health awareness at the venue, emphasizing the importance of mental health in overall wellbeing.
The Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) conducted training on “Psychological First Aid: Empowering Trainee Nurses” at Kanaklata School of Nursing, Tezpur. The session aimed to equip trainee nurses with essential skills for providing mental health support.
October 11: Food Safety Surveillance Drive
The week concluded with Team Food Safety, Sonitpur, conducting a comprehensive surveillance and awareness drive in Tezpur town. The Food Safety Wing team collected and tested 44 food samples to ensure public health and safety standards across local establishments.
From honouring dedicated officers to promoting conservation, public health, and safety, each initiative undertaken this week reflected a unified commitment to progress and collective well-being. The series of events not only showcased Sonitpur’s dynamic governance but also highlighted the community’s increasing engagement in building a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable future.
