In a successful anti-narcotics operation, the Itakhola police arrested a drug peddler in the Tengabasti area on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The suspect, identified as Khairul Islam from Kekakuli village in Khanamukh, was apprehended while transporting drugs on a motorcycle from Chariduar to Itakhola.
Acting on intelligence from a confidential source, police intercepted the suspect in Tengabasti, where they discovered and seized 20 containers filled with illegal substances weighing approximately 26.74 grams. Police also confiscated a mobile phone and the Bajaj Pulsar 125 motorcycle with registration number AS12-AH-5935 that was being used to transport the narcotics.

The arrest marks another step in local law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. Officials confirmed that Islam was in the process of supplying the narcotics when he was caught. The police operation was part of continued surveillance activities in the area, which has seen increased enforcement against drug-related crimes.
Authorities have not yet released details about the specific type of drugs seized, though the precise weight measurement suggests the evidence is being carefully documented for prosecution purposes. The investigation is ongoing as police work to determine if the suspect is connected to larger drug distribution networks operating between Sonitpur and Itakhola.
The alarming increase in illegal drug trafficking and substance abuse across Assam in recent years has become a matter of serious concern. This disturbing trend is not merely destroying the youth but shattering entire family structures. Regions including Itakhola, Balipara, and Khanamukh in Sonitpur district have unfortunately emerged as hotspots for drug trade and consumption. The series of recent drug seizures highlights the critical importance of continued police interventions to curb these illicit operations. Perhaps most concerning is how the drug crisis has expanded beyond urban centers to infiltrate rural communities. Without decisive and sustained action from authorities and community stakeholders, the scourge of addiction threatens to claim countless more victims across the region.
Local residents have expressed relief at the arrest, as communities continue to grapple with the social impacts of drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region.
