The Brihattar Tezpur Bangali Samaj (বৃহত্তৰ তেজপুৰ বাঙালি সমাজ) in Tezpur has decided to celebrate this year’s Durga Puja in a quiet and spiritual way, without loud music or DJs. This decision was made to honour the memory of beloved artist Zubeen Garg.
The announcement came during a special meeting held at Hem Barua Smriti Bhawan in Tezpur. The event was organized by the Brihattar Tezpur Bangali Samaj. The meeting began with shradhanjali to Zubeen Garg, followed by one minute of silence to honour the legendary artist.

Important officials attended the meeting, including:
- District Commissioner Anand Kumar Das
- Circle Officer Madhurjya Buragohain
- Vice Chairperson of Tezpur Municipal Board Sangeeta Bose
- Journalist Pankaj Baruah
Head Committee Member Sujit Ghosh explained that this year’s Durga Puja will be completely different from usual celebrations. There will be no loud music, dancing, or party-like atmosphere. Instead, the focus will be on prayer and devotion.
During the festival, only devotional music will be played, including selected songs by Zubeen Garg. Traditional instruments like dhak (drums) will accompany the prayer rituals. Even on Vijaya Dashami, the final day of celebration, there will be no dancing or loud festivities.
District Commissioner Anand Kumar Das praised the Bengali community’s decision. He announced that he will share this initiative with other areas in the district, including Dhekiajuli, Barchalla, and Rangapara. He encouraged all Durga Puja committees in these areas to consider adopting a similar spiritual approach.
“The District Commissioner appreciated the decision coming from the Bengali Samaj,” organizers noted, showing official support for the community’s thoughtful tribute.
This year’s celebration represents more than just a festival change. It shows how deeply the people of Tezpur respected Zubeen Garg and want to honour his memory in a meaningful way. By choosing spirituality over loud celebrations, the community is setting an example of how festivals can be both respectful and deeply meaningful.
The decision affects all Durga Puja committees in Tezpur, creating a united approach to this year’s celebrations that puts devotion and respect at the center.
