Tezpur Airport Closure Sparks Concern: NADA Appeals for Reconsideration

The North Assam Distributors Association (NADA) in Tezpur has raised an urgent appeal against the planned 18-month closure of Tezpur Airport. Secretary Rajendra Bhati submitted a memorandum to key government officials, including the Minister of Civil Aviation and Assam’s Chief Minister, requesting reconsideration of the decision to shut down the airport from October 1, 2024, to March 2026 for maintenance work. The association emphasizes the airport’s crucial role in connecting the North Bank of Brahmaputra to important destinations in Arunachal Pradesh and serving various significant establishments in the region.

While acknowledging the necessity of maintenance for accommodating larger aircraft and ensuring national security, NADA argues that a complete closure would severely impact the daily movement of approximately 250 passengers. They propose an alternative approach of phased maintenance, suggesting closing one runway strip at a time to allow continued operations. The association expresses particular concern over the timing of the closure, which coincides with the festive and holiday season, potentially causing significant inconvenience to travelers and local citizens.

In their appeal, NADA requests a revision of the decision to completely halt operations at Tezpur Airport. They stress that a positive response from the authorities would address the grievances of potentially affected passengers and citizens in the area.
