A significant milestone was recently achieved at B K Memorial Hospital with the successful completion of a rare and delicate surgery on a one-day-old newborn suffering from imperforate anus—a congenital condition where the anal opening is absent.
In earlier times, such complex cases were often referred to advanced medical centers in Guwahati or Delhi due to the unavailability of specialized facilities in Tezpur. However, with the continuous advancement of local medical infrastructure and expertise, patients can now receive critical care within Tezpur itself.
The intricate surgery was performed by a skilled team led by Dr. Bibhu Priyo Das (Surgeon), Dr. Sajan Roy (Anesthetist) and Dr. Arun Kumar (Medical Superintendent) supported by the dedicated staff of B K Memorial Hospital. The procedure involved creating a new pathway from the abdomen, allowing the newborn to pass stool.

The infant is currently recovering well in B K Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Dr. Abdul Hannan (Pediatrician), who is overseeing the baby’s post-operative care, reported that the newborn is responding positively. However, the child will require further reconstructive surgeries in the future.
This remarkable achievement highlights the growing capabilities of local healthcare services in handling rare and complex medical cases. The successful operation demonstrates the progress made in developing medical facilities in smaller cities across Assam. Families in the region can now access specialized care closer to home, reducing the need to travel long distances for critical treatments.
This case represents not only medical advancement but also brings hope to many families who may face similar situations in the future, knowing that such complex procedures can now be successfully performed locally at B K Memorial Hospital.
