The Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), a unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), celebrated National Technology Day 2025 with a special event at its Tezpur facility on Friday. The celebration featured a technical oration on bio-engineering approaches for landslide mitigation and brought together distinguished guests from academic and security sectors.
Dr. Ajitabh Bora, Scientist-E at DRL-DRDO, delivered the keynote oration on “Bio-engineering approach for landslide mitigation,” highlighting innovative solutions to address this critical challenge facing India’s northeastern region. The presentation showcased how biotechnology applications are being developed to strengthen slope stability and prevent landslides in strategic locations.

The event was graced by Prof. Jitender Sharma, Dean of Life Sciences at Kurukshetra University, who served as the Chief Guest. Other distinguished Guests of Honour included Prof. Anil Sindhu, Chairman of Biotechnology at DC Ram University of Science & Technology, New Delhi; Prof. Rajinder Singh, Principal Scientist at ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal; and Sh. Virendra M. Mittal, Superintendent of Police, Anti-Corruption Branch, New Delhi.
In his welcome address, Dr. D.V. Kamboj, Centre Head of DRL-DRDO, welcomed the guests and provided an overview of the laboratory’s ongoing research and development activities. He emphasized the center’s commitment to developing technologies tailored to the unique challenges of India’s northeastern region.
Prof. Sharma, in his address, commended the scientists at DRL for their exemplary work in developing innovative products with dual-use applications. He specifically highlighted several key innovations, including:
- Iron Removal Unit: A water purification system designed for areas with high iron content in groundwater
- High Altitude Bio-toilet: Specialized sanitation facilities engineered to function effectively in extreme cold conditions
- Capsigrenade: A non-lethal crowd control device based on capsaicin compounds
These technologies, while primarily developed for defense applications, also offer significant spin-off benefits for civilian use. The Chief Guest urged the research team to continue focusing on technologies addressing the specific challenges faced by troops deployed in India’s northeastern region.
National Technology Day, observed on May 16 at DRL-DRDO Tezpur, commemorates India’s technological advancements and scientific achievements. The celebration at DRL-DRDO Tezpur highlights the organization’s dedication to indigenous technology development and innovation, serving both national security and societal needs.
