Tezpur University made a significant stride in honoring the legacy of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan by inaugurating a state-of-the-art 500-capacity boys’ hostel named after the legendary warrior. The inauguration ceremony, held on Tuesday, 18 March, also marked the launch of the University’s School of Legal Studies, a milestone in advancing legal education in the region.

The newly constructed Lachit Borphukan Boys’ Hostel is a Ground+3 storey building with a built-up area of 9600 sqm, designed to accommodate students in double-occupancy rooms. Reflecting the University’s commitment to inclusivity, the hostel is disability-friendly, featuring ramps and specially designed toilet facilities for physically challenged individuals. This development follows the University’s earlier construction of a 500-capacity girls’ hostel named after freedom fighter Kanaklata Barua.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, emphasized the importance of instilling cultural values among the youth. “By naming these hostels after Lachit Borphukan and Kanaklata Barua, we aim to inspire our students with the courage, patriotism, and leadership exemplified by these iconic figures,” he said.
In addition to the hostel, the University inaugurated the School of Legal Studies, a dedicated facility for legal education in compliance with Bar Council of India (BCI) regulations. The new building features well-ventilated and spacious classrooms, a library, and a Moot Court Hall to provide practical training in advocacy and courtroom procedures.
“The establishment of a separate School of Legal Studies is a significant step forward for our Department of Law, which currently offers LLM and Ph.D. programs. This dedicated space will bring more students to ongoing admission season in law,” Prof. Singh added.
Dr. Madhumita Acharjee, Head, Department of Law, informed that with the new facility, the Department shall start integrated B.A. LL.B. (Hons) from the next academic year.
During the inaugural event, Deans, Wardens, Proctor, Registrar, Finance Officer, Controller of Examinations and Executive Engineer of the University were present on the occasion.
