The Department of Law and Dr Ambedkar Chair, Tezpur University today observed the Constitution Day (November 26, 2024) with a thought-provoking lecture delivered by Shri Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, former Director General of Police (DGP), Assam and current Chief Information Commissioner of Assam. Constitution Day is celebrated in India on 26 November every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India.
Shri Mahanta delivered the lecture on the topic Democracy, Freedom of Speech and Transparency. The event was held at the Council Hall of the University. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Mahanta delved into the profound significance of the Indian Constitution, highlighting its role in shaping the nation’s democratic framework. He urged the youth to recall the contributions of freedom fighters to better understand our constitution. The former DGP further added that violence as a way of protest results in chaos in society and directly challenges right to life of other citizens. He also touched upon various aspects of Right to Information Act and the role it is playing to maintain transparency.
Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University, while addressing the gathering reminded everyone that the Constitution has not only given us rights but also bestowed upon us responsibilities. “It is our duty to uphold the values enshrined in it, to respect the law, and to actively participate in the democratic process”, the Vice Chancellor said.
The event started with reading out the preamble of Indian Constitution. During the occasion, a wall magazine of the Department of Law on the theme was also inaugurated. Dr Madhumita Acharjee, Head, Department of Law, Dr. Amiya Kumar Das, Ambedkar Chair professor, Prof Chandan Kumar Sharma, Director, International Affairs along with departmental faculty and students were present on the occasion.
