Tezpur College launches Open-Access Digital Library to preserve Local Literature and expand Public Learning

Tezpur, December 26, 2025 (Friday): The Tezpur College Digital Library was inaugurated on Friday, December 26, 2025, in what the college’s principal, Dr. Manoj Kumar Hazarika, described as “a special day in the history of Tezpur College”. Unlike conventional e-library systems that restrict access to enrolled students, this new platform offers open access to the wider community, including local authors seeking publication opportunities.

The digital library currently houses more than fifty books, including rare and valuable texts that were previously difficult to access. Notable works available include Bakul Roy’s “Kamatapuri Rajbanshi Abhidhan”, Dr. Swadhinota Mahanta’s “Jyoti Prasadar Kabya-Natar Samiksha”, Dr. Ranjan Kalita’s “Asomor Paramparagata Sanskriti” (Traditional Culture of Assam), and Dr. Pranjit Hazarika’s “Chintar Rengoni”. The collection also features a rare “Kirtan Puthi” attributed to Haribilas Agarwala, collected by Bharat Chandra Baruah.

College magazines dating back to 1977 are also available through the platform, preserving decades of institutional history and student contributions.

The initiative addresses a critical gap for researchers and readers seeking information about Tezpur, Assam, and the broader region. Dr. Hazarika explained that during his own research years, limited information about the locality was available online, inspiring his vision for a digital library that could serve future generations.

The platform also offers a publishing avenue for local authors whose works might otherwise remain unpublished due to financial constraints or lack of publisher interest. In an era where aspiring writers hope to see their books on platforms such as Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and Google e-Book, the Tezpur College Digital Library provides an alternative route to worldwide distribution.

Dr. Mitali Goswami, Librarian of Tezpur College Library, and Pranjal Das, Library Assistant, played instrumental roles in realising the project. Pranjal Das handled the technical implementation, whilst the team worked collaboratively to ensure seamless access to resources.

Looking ahead, the college plans to create audio versions of selected books to cater to the needs of younger generations and diverse learning preferences.

Dr. Hazarika expressed gratitude to all contributors and called for continued support from the community to help the digital library reach its full potential as a resource for society.
