Assam, October 6, 2025 (Monday): Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched the ‘Shraddhanjali’ scheme, a special initiative to support Assamese families who lose their loved ones outside the state. This scheme ensures that the mortal remains of Assam residents are brought back home respectfully, allowing families to perform last rites according to tradition.
The ‘Shraddhanjali’ scheme is managed by the Home and Political Department of Assam and carried out by the Special Branch of Assam Police. Families needing assistance can reach out through several channels: the police control room helpline (112), the Special Branch control room (0361-2381511), the Sewa Setu portal, or WhatsApp at 91810-14888.

However, the scheme will not be available for families considered financially well-off or those able to arrange transportation themselves. It also does not cover cases where people die in other states while traveling for medical treatment.
Losing a loved one is always painful, but the situation becomes even more challenging when death occurs far from home. The financial burden and logistical difficulties of transporting mortal remains across state borders can add tremendous stress to already grieving families. The Shraddhanjali scheme aims to removes this burden, allowing families to focus on mourning and performing last rites with dignity.
