20 July, Monday: There have been numerous news and reports of marriage parties turning into COVID-19 hotspots, and a recent marriage party in Sonitpur seems to have joined the list.
On Friday (July 17), 21 people who attended a marriage party including the newly-married couple were tested positive for COVID-19. The marriage was reportedly held on July 2 in Sonitpur’s Dhekiajuli area. The bridegroom’s father was the first to develop symptoms and after a test, he came out as COVID-19 positive. Without any delay, health officials and the local administration started collecting samples of people who attended the party including the bride and bridegroom, and 21 people were found out to be infected by the virus.
According to Mr. Kamaljyoti Bora, Dhekiajuli Circle Officer, the samples of the secondary contact list are being collected, and all other invitees are being tracked down. Only a few days ago 22 people were tested COVID-19 positive in Lakhimpur district after being a part of a wedding party, and now due to lack of precautions the situation has repeated itself.
