National Press Day 2022 observed at Tezpur University

Tezpur, Nov 17 : On the occasion of National Press Day 2022, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University organized an interactive session, where Professor Sanjay Dwivedi, Director General of IIMC, New Delhi & PJ Baruah, noted journalist & Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune graced the event as the Key-note Speakers.

Professor Abhijit Bora, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism delivered the welcome address, while the inaugural speech was delivered by Professor Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya, Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of the University.

Professor Sanjay Dwivedi spoke about the significance of press in our democracy and the importance of understanding the actual meaning of press. He explained that press stands for Public Related Emergency Social Service. He also spoke on democratization of media, media activism, right to information, prominence of print media in our country, the Indian discourse of communication and the role of media personnel in protecting Human Rights. He also explained the students the difference between views and reporting.

Speaking on the occasion, PJ Baruah elaborated the challenges of reporting in regional press. Sharing his journey as a journalist he stressed importance on accuracy and fact checking. He shared couple of his experience from his long stint of journalistic career and urged the students to be careful of what they are reporting. He shared one incident where due to misreporting a Deputy Commissioner was killed. “Facts are very sacred and we cannot play with them”, Baruah said.

Assistant Professor, Anjuman Bora delivered the vote of thanks and praised the Key-note Speakers for their presence in the event and for their precious time. The first year batch of the department has made a wall magazine on the occasion of National Press day and it was inaugurated by the esteemed guests.

The event was carried forward with a panel discussion on the topic ‘Regional journalism in the age of globalization’ in which prevalent issues like technological revolution in media, its negative impacts, ignorance of regional affairs in Northeast India and effectiveness of Citizen Journalism was discussed.
The event started with a chorus- ‘Manuhe Manuhor Babe by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika performed by the students.
