07 July, Tuesday : A panic like situation occurred at the vacant New Women’s Hostel (NWH) of Tezpur Central University where a giant water monitor (‘গুঁই’) was detected at the hostel’s security room by it’s guards today at around 03.15 pm. Humans if bitten by common water monitors may be injected with venom, which produces a mild, but not fatal effect, as well as exposed to infectious bacteria. This monitor can also use its whip-like tail and sharp claws as weapons.
Earlier, the University’s hostel was mostly vacated by concerned authorities as the Institutional premise has been taken as a quarantine centre owing to Covid-19 pandemic.
Tezpur University has its own variety of various flora and fauna and these incidents of animal trespass viz. Monkeys, snakes in hostels are no new concept for its academicians. However such incidents should be strictly monitored as various lowbrow animals and reptiles may cause severe harm to students residing in its premises.
